Sir Francis Level

Sir Francis Level

Located at 993 000, this was the last level ever to be driven in Gunnerside Gill. Driving began in 1864 by the Old Gang Lead Mining Company which by then was a joint venture between the Old Gang and AD companies although Sir George Denys of the AD company put up most of the funds for driving. He had secured investment to explore the veins down to the Fourth and Fifth Yard Limestones where he hoped a good strike would be made, this was a huge gamble as the industry was in decline due to foreign competition but Sir George was passionate about his work and believed advances in technology would work in his favour. In 1867 work was sped up by the introduction of pneumatic drilling equipment by Sir George, the exhaust air from the drills had the benefit of ventilating the level, compressed air was provided by a hydraulically driven compressor fed by water from dams on the fell above. When the drive was completed a hydraulic lifting and pumping engine was installed underground at the forehead and is still there today, once again fed by water from dams above. At the opening of the mine Sir George had a barrel of ale taken up to the forehead and he and his men drank to future success, but despite all his efforts the mine was never prosperous and this hailed the end of Lead mining in Swaledale forever.
